Paranoia after a lengthy repair process

Driving the Mini after everything that’s happened, I’m so paranoid of every little thing, haha.

“Is clutch chatter like this supposed to be a normal part of converting from a dual-mass flywheel to a single mass? I know people say it is, but still...”

“Did my engine always have this much vibration...?”

“Were my injectors always this loud...?”

“Why is my evap purge canister tapping like that? Is it because the car sat for so long...?

“What about what little stripe of flat rubber with the groove in it that was left over at the end of everything? We couldn’t figure out what is was for. Was it important? It was only like, 6" long...where could it possibly even go?”

“Is my car down on power? Do I have a vacuum leak? It’s not throwing any codes, though. Is this how much power it used to have? I can’t remember!”

“What’s that noise...?”

“What is causing that rattle...?”

“....nevermind, that rattle’s always been there.”

After my head gaskets blew, I watched my temp gauge more than my speedometer or fuel gauge. I listened to every beat of the engine. I checked my coolant daily, along with the oil. I did this for months, waiting for something to go wrong. Three years later, nothing has happened. The fear and obsession fades away eventually.

I know that feeling. Eventually it does go away but it takes a bit.

The paranoia of overheating is such a haunting feeling. Normal people have nightmares about being pantsless in public. I have nightmares about the temp gauge spiking red! All because my last car overheated a few times due to coolant leaks. No problems in this car and yet I still worry.

That’s pretty much a constant feeling for the first couple years of being a mechanic.

I drive a 4200lbs SUV with an anemic 150hp V6, that’s known for it’s failure prone head gaskets. Watching that needle is still a haunting moment, even though everything that could fail is new, and an updated version.

well the saving grace is, I never need to watch my needle since it is way overdamped. So there is no way it would help in an overheating scenario. The car would be overheating long before the needle actually moves. Yay overdamped gauges!
